The conversion from Luminosity Functions to Mass Functions

چکیده

The aim of this talk is to review the methodology required to translate the observed luminosity function of a stellar sample into the mass function of the stars constituting the sample. Emphasis is given to the stellar models which necessarily underlie this operation, as the mass function is proportional to the derivative of the mass{luminosity relation, and this latter quantity can not be derived from observations with a suucient precision. On the other hand, when adopting a theoretical mass{luminosity relation, some useful rules must be kept in mind to obtain a physically meaningful result. The methodology is applied to the following speciic elds: 1. derivation of the initial mass function (IMF) of nearby low mass stars and of disk stars; 2. derivation of the IMF for the low masses in globular clusters; 3. derivation of the IMF in young stellar populations. In all cases, the stellar physics which enters into the determination of the mass{luminosity relation, and its uncertainties, is shortly discussed.

LINEAR PULSATION CHARACTERISTICS OF MIRA VARIABLE STARS

The linear adiabatic pulsation-periods of Mira variable stars have been derived. Approximately 2701[1]models were calculated for M = 0.7 MΘ to 2 MΘ stars with radii from 180 RΘ to 340 RΘ and luminosities from 2800 LΘ to 10,000 LΘ. The chemical composition of all models is (X,Z) = (0.7,0.02). From the result of this study, linear relations on Luminosity-Period-Mass relationship and luminosity-pe...

Co Luminosity Functions for Fir and B-band Selected Galaxies and the First Estimate for Ωhi+h2

We derive a non-parametric CO luminosity function using a FIR and an optical B-band selected sample of the galaxies included in the FCRAO Extragalactic CO Survey. The FIR selected sample is defined using the IRAS Bright Galaxy Surveys (BGS; IRAS 60 micron flux density ≥ 5.24 Jy). Although our CO sample is not complete, the normalization using the BGS reproduces the IRAS 60 micron luminosity fun...

The abundance of brown dwarfs

The amount of mass contained in low-mass objects is investigated anew. Instead of using a mass–luminosity relation to convert a luminosity function to a mass function, I predict the mass-luminosity relation from assumed mass functions and the luminosity functions of Jahreiss &Wielen (1997) and Gould, Bahcall & Flynn (1997). Comparison of the resulting mass–luminosity relations with data for bin...

The Relation between Quasar and Merging Galaxy Luminosity Functions and the Merger-induced Star Formation Rate of the Universe

Using a model for the self-regulated growth of supermassive black holes in mergers involving gas-rich galaxies, we study the relationship between quasars and the population of merging galaxies and, as a consequence, predict the merger-induced star formation rate density of the Universe. These mergers drive nuclear inflows of gas, fueling starbursts and “buried” quasar activity until feedback en...

A New Approach to Solve Fully Fuzzy Linear Programming with Trapezoidal Numbers Using Conversion Functions

Recently, fuzzy linear programming problems have been considered by many. In the literature of fuzzy linear programming several models are offered and therefore some various methods have been suggested to solve these problems. One of the most important of these problems that recently has been considered; are Fully Fuzzy Linear Programming (FFLP), which all coefficients and variables of the prob...
